Gmail cannot be traced, you can never see where they are sending from end of story. Maybe the local FBI office can help you but if you are not in the USA you are alone. We reported a fraud person one year ago to the internet service of the FBI and have not got any answer yet. Google who owns Gmail will not help you in any way to trace the person. The IP numbers will just show the location of the Google server and not the actually location of the user. The only thing you can do is to ask the dating site to provide you with the information where the person log in but most dating sites are not very cooperative when it comes to this.
If the person using a software to send his Gmails than you can still see where he or she is otherwise it is impossible. You can off course the account to Gmail but the only thing they will do is close down the Gmail account.
So if you meet someone online that is using a Gmail you can never check where this person writing from.
